DanKatsu Volume 4, Chapter 5

Chapter 5: An Unbelievable Draw! The Rare Boss <Debubu Special> Appears

"Ah—ahh~, wait, does this mean we’re lucky?"

"The <Debubu> isn’t here…"

"Zephyrus-kun, this… this has to mean—"

After a leisurely break in the <Ghost Cave Dungeon>’s safe zone, we passed through the gate to the boss chamber… and stopped dead in our tracks.

The boss we should’ve been facing—<Debubu Ghost>—was nowhere to be found.

Yet the teleportation circle hadn’t activated, and there was no sign that someone else had defeated the boss and left it.

Which left only one possible conclusion.

"Yeah… this is a rare boss spawn. For real? The odds of hitting one of these are insanely low, you know."

"Zephyrus, you’re certain? I’ve heard that phenomenon is rarely seen."

"No doubt about it. We’ve run into rare bosses several times already—there’s no mistaking it."

"Mm. What’s a rare boss?"

"…You don’t know?"

While Rika tightened her grip on my words, Kalua tilted her head, genuinely clueless. She doesn’t know about rare bosses… seriously?

"Basically, it’s a boss that’s stronger than normal! Like it’s evolved into something else!"

"…Well, that’s not wrong. Close enough."

"Mm. Got it."

Hmph, I was about to step in and give a proper explanation, but Lana cut me off. That was supposed to be my role.

Still, there’s one part even Lana won’t know. Time to take it back.

"The normal boss here is <Debubu Ghost>. Like I told you earlier, it’s a fat ghost that overwhelms you with sheer numbers—a tough opponent. But then you have the rare boss, <Debubu Special>, which cranks that difficulty up another level."

No sooner had I finished speaking than the far end of the chamber lit up—the visual effect of a rare boss spawning.

And there it was, materializing before us—not a fat blob ghost, but a hulking, muscle-bound macho specter: <Debubu Special>. Its build resembled a sumo wrestler, thick and solid.

Also known as <The True Muscle Killer> or <Muscle Debubu the Festival Freak>.

Most just call it <DebSpe>.

Not only does it have the ghost attribute that renders the proud muscles of any 【Muscle Warrior】 useless—it even sports a body of muscle far surpassing theirs!

The tale of 【Muscle Warriors】 losing heart after being muscle-shamed by this ghost’s physique had caused quite a stir at the academy not too long ago.

"<Debubu Special> is the powered-up version of <Debubu>! It doesn’t just split into <Mini-Ghosts>—the main body attacks physically too! And be warned—if you counterattack the main body, it’ll draw massive aggro from the <Mini-Ghosts>, who’ll swarm the backline. Rear guard, don’t hit the main body while the minions are up! As for the <Mini-Ghosts>, same as before: wipe them all out before they fuse together! Move out!"

""""Ooooh!""""

No time for a detailed breakdown—we had to start the battle with just the essentials.

"Ke-ke-ke-ke-kehh—keh!"

<Debubu Special> flexed its bulging muscles, then began lumbering forward.

"Hit it with everything first! Lana, stick to mid-tier spells for now. If you go all out, you’ll steal too much hate!"

"Got it! 『Blessing of Holy Magic』! 『Blade of Light』!"

"『Saint Pillar』!"

"『Throwing Dagger』!"

"Ge-ke-keh—keh-ke-keh!?"

Our first strike—an all-out barrage before the <Mini-Ghosts> summoned.

This part was the same as the normal <Debubu> fight.

Lana cast a magic-boosting buff before unleashing 『Blade of Light』. If she went all in, though, the <Eden> number-one mage in INT would instantly out-aggro everyone. That’d mean she’d be swarmed by <Mini-Ghosts> and <Debubu Special> in seconds. That would be a bad situation.

So for now, she had to hold back.

Next came Hanna’s mid-tier holy magic.

Right now, Hanna was equipped with the <Holy Fan of Exorcism>, a drop from the rare boss <Onmyoji Taro>’s gold chest. Ghosts are weak to the holy attribute, so she swapped gear specifically for this fight. With that, plus a <Maholitan-R> booster, her spell dealt a huge blow to <Debubu Special>’s HP.

Even so, its damage was only about on par with Lana’s 『Blade of Light】. A bit depressing, but hey, a specialist is still a specialist.

By the way, bomb-type items were still being balanced and were not yet usable. Hanna had been training hard with them, but they weren’t ready for boss fights. Still a work in progress.

Which meant today, Hanna was firmly in the role of magic attacker.

Kalua’s 『Throwing Dagger】 flew as well, but since it was physical damage, it barely scratched the boss.

Meanwhile, Rika and I rushed straight toward it.

"Ke-ke-ke-keh! Bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo!"

There it was—the first phase. <Mini-Ghost> 『Split』. Unlike the normal <Debubu>, <DebSpe> spat out twelve <Mini-Ghosts> per phase, making it a much tougher fight.

"Just like we planned—I’ll draw the minis, Rika, you take the boss!"

"Understood!"

"『Appeal』`!"

Rika’s job 【Princess Samurai】 excelled in one-on-one duels, but as a tank that needed to pull large groups, she wasn’t that great—she didn’t even carry a shield.

That’s why this time I had her handle the main body.

I’d deal with the minis.

"Alright, little ones—over here! Gather up… 『Shine Lightning』!"

"Kuke-keh!?"

I lured the <Mini-Ghosts> back toward the center, then wiped them out with a wide-area spell. With a horizontal sweep of my sword, lightning scattered, and the minis caught in it vanished in flashes of light. Oh man, that felt so good—nothing beats wiping them all in one shot!

Out of twelve, I managed to take out ten in a single strike. Insanely satisfying!

"I’ll handle the stragglers! 『Pillar of Light』!"

Lana’s follow-up attack finished off the last two, clearing the wave completely.

"Rika, go for it!"

"My name is Rika! Face me in fair combat—『Proclamation』! 『Kagemusha』!"

"Ge-ge-geh!"

Rika’s 『Proclamation』 and 『Kagemusha』 were taunt skills. With all that hate piled up, <DebSpe> turned its focus squarely on her.

"Ge-geh!"

"『Deflect』!"

The ghost’s bulging muscles rippled, then it threw a massive punch straight at Rika. But she coolly caught it with her defensive skill, parrying it cleanly.

"Ge!?"

"Whoa! No way—you actually parried that? That was flawless!"

"Mm. Rika’s parries are the best in the world."

Unfazed by the size difference, Rika’s perfect parry sent the blow aside. She countered by raising both blades.

"『Swallow Reversal』!"

"Ge!?"

A counter skill that gained extra power when used after a parry—Rika’s 『Swallow Reversal』 slashed forward. But since the target was ghost-type, the blow phased through, landing nowhere near the damage it should have.

"Murgh."

She looked frustrated, but I was impressed.

That seamless combo—taunt, parry, counter—was seriously badass!

I could sometimes pull it off too, if luck was on my side, but my success rate was still low. I should really ask Rika-sensei for some tips on player skill next time.

"Gu-ke-ke-keh! Bo-bo-bo-bo—!"

Ah—focus. We’re still in the middle of a boss fight.

Now it was the second phase. This time, twenty-four <Mini-Ghosts> poured out.

"Argh, missed the timing."

"Damn it, muscle ghost! You’re spawning minis too fast!"

Complaints rose from the rear guard, who missed their chance to unload a barrage.

Well, couldn’t be helped. Rika hadn’t drawn enough hate yet, so the backline couldn’t risk firing. Sure, <DebSpe>’s second phase was fast, but honestly, our coordination had slipped.

"『Appeal』!"

And so, it was back to phase-one tactics.

I pulled the minis, then Lana and I blasted them down with AoE magic.

And then—

"『Saint Wall』!"

"『Force Sonic』! 『Through Slash』!"

Hanna raised a glowing barrier with her holy attribute AoE defense spell, 『Saint Wall』, damaging the swarm as they crashed into it. The few survivors were quickly finished by Kalua’s quick hands.

Her skill 『Force Sonic』 was in the same family as my 『Sonic Sword』—a fast-moving strike. Dual-wielding daggers allowed her to unleash a four-hit combo that shredded what was left.

Then came 『Through Slash』, a skill where she dashed through the enemy, cutting them as she slipped past. Pure hit-and-run style.

And just like that, the twenty-four <Mini-Ghosts> were down.

Could this actually be a cakewalk?

"Ge-ge-geh!!"

"『Counter Cut』! 『Cutting Sweep』! 『Deflection Strike』!"

"Ge-ge!?"

<Deb-Spe> unleashed a furious flurry of muscle punches, but Rika blocked every single one with flawless defensive skills. And with her final 『Deflection Strike』, she even sent it staggering back with a huge knockback.

Whoa. That skill rotation was absolutely perfect. Ah—guess I should be attacking too.

"Lightning Burst!"

"Ge-gehh!?"

"Damn, so close."

Just a little more, and the knockback would’ve turned into a knockdown. Too bad.

Still, that direct hit from the high-tier spell racked up some serious damage.

"Ke-kehh!! Bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo—!!"

At last, the third phase. Thirty-six <Mini-Ghosts>.

We’d officially gone beyond the normal <Debubu> fight now. Luckily, thirty-six was the max for <DebSpe>—if it spawned any more, we’d never keep up.

"『Appeal』!"

As always, I tried to draw the minis’ aggro.

But something was different this time. Instead of targeting me, the <Mini-Ghosts> lined up in neat rows—like lanterns at a festival.

"Oh crap, that’s bad news."

<DebSpe>’s body flared with a red aura.

The sign of a unique skill—something only rare bosses had.

Crap. I never explained unique skills to the others, did I!?

"Everyone defend or dodge—now! The unique skill 『Debubu Style: Fireball Festival (612-Burst)』 is coming!!"

"Eh!? What’s that!?"

"Awawa!?"

The backliners scrambled in a panic. I rushed toward Hanna and the others to shield them.

『Debubu Style: Fireball Festival (612-Burst)』—exactly what it sounded like. Six hundred and twelve fireballs were fired in rapid succession.

From those lantern-like <Mini-Ghosts>, fireballs would flood the entire chamber. In the game <DanKatsu>, players used to shout, The festival’s starting!, whenever it happened.

Why? Because during the barrage, <DebSpe> tied on a headband and performed a ridiculous muscle dance while spamming fireballs. So many players laughed themselves half to death—literally wiping in the middle of battle—that the phrase The festival’s starting! Became code for Brace yourselves!

DanKatsu was a single-player game. (With online battles available.)

But in real life, it wasn’t remotely funny. I had to protect Hanna at all costs. She’d really get knocked out.

"Leave it to me! 『Barrier of Holy Protection』!"

"…Huh?"

Before I could panic further, Lana solved everything in an instant.

『Barrier of Holy Protection』 was a defensive barrier spell. It drastically reduced incoming magic damage, and against lower-tier spells, it could nullify them completely. Fireballs? Child’s play.

…Right, Lana was already over 【Saint Lv. 40】.

In the game, no one even came to the <Ghost Cave Dungeon> past Lv. 35, so I’d never considered blocking this phase with that third-tree spell.

With Hanna inside the barrier too, the backline would definitely survive.

"How’s that, Zephyrus? Think this’ll hold?"

"Y-yeah. As expected from you, Lana."

I forced my shaken heart back under control, spun on my heel, and returned to the front.

There—<DebSpe> was tying on its headband.

The fireball storm was about to begin.

Kalua and Rika had already slipped underneath the <Mini-Ghosts>. Smart move. That’d put them outside the skill’s range.

…Wait. Does that mean the only one in range is—me?

"Ge-gehh! Geee—!!"

The muscle ghost bellowed like it was shouting Fire! and the lantern-like minis opened their mouths, unleashing a storm of fireballs across the chamber. Almost all of them aimed right at me.

"Owaahhh!?"

Dodododododo!—an overwhelming barrage of shots was fired.

Seventeen fireballs from each ghost. Even my 『Defense』 skill couldn’t last long—the effect wore off after just a few seconds.

My only option was to dodge for dear life and spam 『Aura Heal』 to stay alive.

"Ghh—ow! 『Aura Heal』! Dammit, that hurts!"

Can’t dodge them all—taking hits left and right!

Shit, if this keeps up, I’ll get downed.

"『Defense』! 『Guard Rush』!"

I abandoned dodging, triggered my defense skills, and somehow managed to avoid being knocked out.

When my skills went on cooldown, I hunkered down in a defensive stance, praying, O shield of the heavens, please protect me! Ow-ow-ow!?

At last, the long festival of fireballs came to an end.

"Ke-ke-kehh!"

"I survived! Now it’s payback time—『Shine Lightning』!"

"Kukeeeh!?"

I’d lost over half my HP, but I endured it! Now the counterattack begins!

"Seriously, Zephyrus, what are you even doing? 『Wish for Healing』!"

"Thanks a ton!"

"Ke-ke-kehh!"

"Keep flexing those muscles while you still can! 『Elemental Sword—Light』!"

With Lana’s 『Wish for Healing』, my HP was back up to about 80%. I switched on my new skill, 『Elemental Sword』, changing my weapon’s attribute to light.

Then I rushed the posing <DebSpe>.

"Wide open! 『Sonic Sword』!"

"Gguehh!?"

The light-element strike hit its weakness dead-on. <DebSpe> shrieked in pain, its health bar dropping sharply.

"<Debubu Special>, I shall be your opponent."

"Ke-kehh!"

"『Deflect』!"

At Rika’s challenge, the boss flexed its bulging arms and swung a lariat—but Rika was already there, blocking it head-on.

Her use of defensive skills was flawless.

By unlocking three more defensive skills in the second-tier tree, she could now parry in quick succession without worrying about cooldowns. Her skill levels were still low, so for now she could only neutralize blows, but once she leveled up, she’d start knocking enemies back or even dropping them flat. At that point, no one would be able to stand against her.

"Zephyrus. I’ll finish this. Secret Technique—『Dual Sweep』!"

"Ge-gehh!?"

"Got it! 『Lightning Slash』!"

"Guggehh!?"

Rika’s dual-blade defense technique connected, blasting the boss back in a massive knockback. This time, I wasn’t letting it escape.

I unleashed my high-powered 『Lightning Slash』, finally knocking <DebSpe>.

"Now! All-out attack!"

"Leave it to me!"

"Let’s go!"

Seizing their long-awaited chance, Lana and Hanna unleashed devastating spells, while I chained together 『Brave Heart』, 『Brave Slash』, 『Falcon Strike』, and 『Lightning Burst』 to pile on heavy damage.

And then—

"Geh… keh…"

Battered by our relentless onslaught, <DebSpe>’s HP hit zero. With a dramatic swirl of effects, its bulging muscles deflated like a balloon, and it vanished.

The <Debubu Special> battle—victory!

"We won!"

"We did it!"

"W-we really did it!"

"V."

The usual victory shout echoed. Even Hanna managed to join in this time. Good—next time, say it without stumbling!

"Fufu. What’s this? Do you always do that, Zephyrus?"

"Pretty much! When you beat a tough enemy, you just can’t help but shout."

"I see… I get it. That was indeed a formidable foe."

As a rare boss, <Debubu Special>’s strength was about on par with Beginner Upper-tier bosses. For Rika and Kalua, both with only Job Lv. 24, it was a brutal opponent.

But in the end, Rika’s flawless parries completely shut down the boss. Incredible.

Honestly, when she joined just because she liked the <Mochikko> plushie, I worried if she’d pull her weight. Turns out she’s an unbelievable prodigy. I’d like to go back and pat myself on the back—nice scouting, past me.

"…I didn’t really help much."

"Well, this time just wasn’t a good matchup for you, Kalua. You carried hard against the <Battle Wolf>, remember? Don’t beat yourself up. And you really helped with cleaning up the minis."

If Kalua had had an elemental weapon, she would’ve shone here too. With her insane AGI—almost two hundred—those slow <Mini-Ghosts> would’ve been easy prey for her hit-and-run style.

Even so, Kalua did her best, even when her attacks weren’t very effective.

I’d kept an eye on her, and she managed to take down quite a few <Mini-Ghosts>. Most of them were strays left behind by Lana and Hanna, but cleaning up those leftovers is still an important role.

"Hey, Zephyrus-kun! Let’s open the treasure chest!"

"Right. Since it’s a rare boss, the loot should be promising."

"Mhm. Let’s go."

At Hanna’s words, I checked the drops. This time we got two <Silver Chests>.

So just the guaranteed minimum. Bit of a letdown.

Well, we did score a <Gold Chest> from the last rare boss, so I guess I can’t complain.

I glanced at the fan in Hanna’s hand and shrugged.

"All right, about these chests—"

""Me!""

Fast! Lana and Hanna’s hands shot up before I even finished my sentence. Talk about enthusiasm.

Even if they’re just <Silver Chests>, they’re still from a rare boss. There’s a good chance something valuable’s inside. Of course, they’d be excited. Honestly, I wanted to open them too.

Damn it, I hesitated and lost my chance!

"Hm? What’s going on?"

"Some kind of event?"

Since the conversation cut off halfway, the ones in the back looked confused. Sorry, guys—our party has way too many treasure chest addicts.

For a moment, I could’ve sworn I saw Sierra glaring in disapproval and Ester giving me a troubled look… but that had to be my imagination.

"We’re deciding who gets to open the chests. That’s what this is about."

Lana explained with an unusually serious look. Hanna nodded beside her, equally dead serious.

Of course, I was on their side too.

"I-I see. Personally, I don’t mind, so whoever wants to open them should just go ahead."

"No, Rika, that won’t do. In <Eden>, there’s a rule: treasure chests must be opened fairly. Inequality is forbidden."

…Wait, what? Since when did our guild have such a rule? As guild master, I’ve never heard of it.

When the hell did that get established?

"Mhm. I want to try opening one."

"Yes, that’s the spirit, Kalua! You really get it!"

Lana beamed at Kalua, who had timidly raised her hand.

"Well, there you have it. No need to hold back, Rika—you should open a chest too. As long as it’s in proper turn."

"It’s not as if I was holding back… but I suppose the saying goes, ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do.’ Very well, I’ll follow <Eden>’s rules."

"Sometimes you even get a <Lucky Cat>-class plushie from chests, you know."

"Then I must open one!"

With everyone motivated, we began discussing who’d actually get the honors this time.

After fair deliberation, it was decided that Kalua and Rika—both first-timers when it came to rare boss drops—would open the chests.

"This is your very first rare boss drop! Don’t forget to pray to the <Lucky Cat-sama> so you get something truly memorable!"

"Kalua, make sure you pray before you open it, okay? Don’t forget!"

"Mhm. I’ll pray properly."

Lana and Hanna solemnly explained the "ritual" of chest-opening.

…Sometimes I wonder if this is really what <Eden> is supposed to be about. But that’s just between you and me.

"Well then, I’ll go first."

So much for Rika’s earlier reluctance—she was the one taking the lead now.

She stood before the chest, closed her eyes in prayer, and then—click—the lid opened.

"This is…"

"Ahaha… a dagger with ice attribute, <Ice Me>."

<Ice Me: Attack Power 20, Ice Attribute>. From hilt to sheath, the blade shimmered with a transparent blue hue. A beautiful weapon.

An elemental dagger drop—exactly the kind of weapon I’d been wanting for ages.

Too bad it came too late. That’s just how <DanKatsu> works sometimes.

You want something badly, but it only drops once you don’t need it anymore. Truly, the curse of the "Desire Sensor." Terrifying monster.

Rika’s disappointment was plain as day, but Kalua’s eyes sparkled.

"Should Kalua use this?"

"You sure?"

"Of course. You’re the only one here who uses daggers anyway."

I nodded in approval. And so, the dagger went to Kalua.

"Thank you, Rika. I’ll treasure it."

"Ahem. If that’s the case, then I suppose it’s fine. You’re welcome."

Next up—it was Kalua’s turn.

Kalua had been staring at <Ice Me> with sparkling eyes, but she put it away for now and, just as Lana and Hanna had taught her, offered a prayer to <Lucky Cat-sama>.

"Please… give Rika something good too, <Lucky Cat-sama>."

She said it loud and clear, her voice ringing with earnestness. Rika immediately turned away.

When I glanced sideways, I saw that Rika was blushing all the way to her ears.

It looked like Kalua was asking for a good drop for Rika, as thanks for the dagger.

Somehow, it felt like my heart had been purified. Not that there was any dirt on it to begin with… but still, I felt cleaner than before.

"Mmh… opening it."

Once she was done praying, Kalua opened the treasure chest with a snap.

"Huh? A fluffy… puffball?"

"Whoa, that’s huge."

What she pulled out was a giant, pure white puffball, soft and fluffy to the touch. Hanna muttered in surprise at the sight.

"Ahh, that’s the rare material <Moko-Moko Puffball ×10>. Yeah… this rarely shows up."

It was the only dud among the rare boss drops, slotted into the loot pool at a ridiculously low rate.

No matter how you looked at it, it didn’t feel "rare" at all.

Even if you had a 【Tailor】 turn it into gear, the defense boost was barely worth mentioning. Clothes, maybe? But the Dungeon Academy required students to wear uniforms, so you’d never actually get to use them.

Which meant, at best, it was just interior decoration. For hardcore <DanKatsu> players, this was the ultimate "worthless rare." Not that anyone really cared—when it did drop, people just sold it off and moved on.

But if Kalua’s prayer had truly reached <Lucky Cat-sama>, then for her, this was a jackpot. Because—

"Zephyrus."

"Yeah. That stuff’s top-tier plushie material. I’m pretty sure the <Mochikko> plushie was made from it."

"Really?"

"We’ll go see Marie-senpai later and have her turn it into a cute plushie."

"Yay. I can’t wait."

Kalua beamed, glancing at Rika as she did.

Rika was still blushing furiously. What a rare sight.

Looks like our guild room is about to fill up with plushies. Maybe it’s about time I bought a display stand or something.

Anyway, when you get a new weapon, the first thing you want to do is try it out.

"Here goes—『Vital Stab』!"

"Geggeh!?"

"It’s down! Nice one, Kalua! Everyone, full assault!"

"…Ke…keh…keh…"

At my command, everyone’s attacks rained down on <Debubu>, shaving off the last of its HP until it collapsed and vanished.

By now, this was our twentieth run—an all-too-familiar sight.

No matter how many times I saw it, though, watching the round, daruma-shaped <Debubu> deflate was always funny.

Currently, we are farming the ghost dungeon’s boss, <Debubu>.

Originally, the plan was just to clear it once, but once Kalua equipped her ice-element dagger <Ice Me>, we changed course—straight into <Debubu> farming.

"V!"

"Kalua’s really pulling her weight now, huh?"

"Yeah. I’m honestly jealous."

Rika, the only one among us without an effective way to deal with <Ghost Traits>, cast an envious glance at Kalua.

Rika didn’t have an elemental weapon. Since there aren’t many jobs that can even equip katanas, the drop rate for them was pretty miserable.

And an elemental katana? Yeah, that wasn’t something you just stumbled across.

Technically, the third-tier skill tree for the 【Princess Samurai】 had various elemental attack skills available, but honestly, it would’ve been nice if we could’ve used them in the second tier instead.

So this time, Rika focused entirely on using her taunt skills and holding the line as the tank.

On the other hand, Kalua, who’d managed to snag an elemental weapon, was absolutely shining.

Even though she only had one blade in her dual-wielding style, the sheer number of strikes she could pump out let her cut down the <Mini-Ghosts> one after another.

Her speed helped too—she could dart back and forth between the Minis and the main body, giving her a lot of versatility. Real flashy to watch.

Of course, it wasn’t just about the number of hits. She also had plenty of strong single-strike skills like 『Vital Stab』, the one she just used to knock down a <Debubu>. If you timed that skill during knockback or while an enemy was locked in a Unique Skill animation, it became much easier to land criticals. A perfect complement to Rika’s fighting style.

"Good work, everyone. Should we wrap it up?"

"Eh? Already?"

"Time really flew by, huh."

Looking up, the sky was dyed orange with sunset—a good stopping point.

Lana and Hanna still looked like they wanted to go a bit longer. Well, compared to our usual pace, twenty runs was a little on the low side.

That was because the <Debubu> boss’s attack patterns had multiple stages, which dragged out the fight. Each run took nearly twice as long as a normal boss cycle.

But the upside was worth it—the loot was solid. <Debubu> had a habit of dropping elemental and magical weapons. The <Manalite Staff> with open slots, for example, only dropped here in Beginner Mid-tier Dungeons.

"Hmm. So, no elemental katana drop after all. Shame."

Rika muttered this with a disappointed look as the last chest yielded nothing more than a single <Wooden Chests>.

"Don’t worry, it’ll drop eventually. Besides, those two you’ve got on your hip are way stronger than anything that drops here."

The starter katanas from the "Marquis" and "Princess" categories were good enough to hold up even in Intermediate-level dungeons. Compared to the average Beginner Mid-tier loot, they were leagues ahead.

"Haha, I know. Still… when I see a new sword, I can’t help but want it."

"Yeah, I get that."

New weapons were always exciting. And weapons just begged to be collected. Back in the game era of <DanKatsu>, I gave up halfway since it cost so much money, but honestly, I wanted to keep every weapon without selling any of them. There was even a "Collector Ending" if you pulled it off. I never managed it, and that still bugs me a little.

"…Hm?"

While chatting with Rika and sweeping up the last drops, I noticed movement at the gate.

Apparently, another party was waiting for the boss room to clear.

That was unusual. First-years maybe? I tilted my head and listened in.

"With our muscles, even the <Debubu Special> is no problem!"

"Damn right! It’s time to show off the reborn Phoenix Muscles!"

"Ghost muscles? Don’t make me laugh! We’ll show them that real flesh-and-blood muscle beauty can’t be beaten!"

"Muscle wasshoi! Muscle wasshoi!"

"Wasshoi! Wasshoi!"

…Oh boy.

No doubt about it—this was the <Machos> guild. The muscle freaks.

And chanting wasshoi like that? They were straight-up treating this like a festival.

They’re just gonna wipe again.

Honestly, running into them right now felt like a bad omen.

Yeah. Time to go. Back to our guild.

"…? What’s up, Zephyrus?"

"Nothing. Let’s head home."

"…? Sure?"

With Lana tilting her head in confusion at my sudden change of heart, we stepped onto the teleport gate and returned.
