DanKatsu Volume 2, Chapter 4

Chapter 4: Jungle Dungeon, Once More. Time to Practice Teamwork.

By nightfall, the three who had gone to the <Beginner Dungeon> finally returned.

"Behold! Level 10! You may shower me with more praise if you like!"

Lana crossed her arms, puffed out her chest, and proudly declared.

From what I heard in the guild room, all of them had officially passed the exam (as expected), and had spent the rest of the day grinding levels. Thanks to that, they all managed to reach Level 10. Which means, starting tomorrow, they can finally challenge the Beginner Low-tier dungeons!

For the record, I’d already praised Lana several times, but apparently, she still wasn’t satisfied and wanted more.

How extravagant! …But I get it.

"Yeah, yeah, congrats on reaching Level 10. I’ve said it enough already, haven’t I? Anyway, that means you’ve cleared the entry requirement for the Beginner Low-tier dungeons."

"Yes. Just as Sir Zephyrus instructed, we have carried it out. Lady Lana is most pleased as well."

"It’s true, the method is efficient. Running the dungeon multiple times in one day until hitting Level 10… With this, we can start the Beginner Low-tier dungeons tomorrow. Why did I ever think you could only run a dungeon once per day?"

Ester puffed up with pride as she reported, while Sierra tilted her head, puzzled as she reflected on today.

And Sierra was right. For some reason, students in this world never try speed farming. Once you clear a dungeon, you’re done for the day—that mindset had completely taken root. (Since the "official backdoor tactics" aren’t known here, people only know the normal grind.)

Thanks to that, leveling was painfully slow. Some even claimed it was better to train your body with push-ups and squats than grind dungeons. That "muscle party" everyone was talking about? Yeah, they must’ve been drilled nonstop by Instructor Davidev—that’s probably how they managed to break into the Beginner Low-tier dungeons so quickly without farming.

"Anyway, since we’re taking on the Beginner Low-tier dungeons starting tomorrow, everyone, make the necessary preparations. If you don’t know what you’ll need, I’ll teach you."

Of course, I planned to go with them too.

With my support, they’d reach Beginner mid-tier much faster.

Not to mention—I can’t exactly sit around twiddling my thumbs while waiting for them to catch up.

"Then would you teach us?"

"Please, your guidance."

"Ester, I’ll leave it to you!"

"If you don’t know either, Lana, then you’re coming too. I’ll start from the basics for everyone."

As expected of noble and royal daughters—they had no clue how to actually dungeon dive. So it fell to me to drill it into them from square one. Especially Lana.

Sierra and Ester had high combat ability, but the dungeon environment was clearly another matter.

Hanna pitched in too, pulling things out of her <Item Bag (Capacity: Large)> to assist me. Sierra, being relatively close to her, asked Hanna lots of questions, and Hanna managed to answer them while helping me out. Looks like she’ll fit in just fine.

Meanwhile, I answered Ester’s questions one by one with live demonstrations.

Lana, on the other hand, struggled with everything since it was all brand new to her.

Still, she had the will and the drive to learn, so I wanted to cheer her on. Go get ’em.

The next day.

At last, it was time to begin proper dungeon conquering.

All five members of our guild, <Eden>, gathered at full strength and headed for one of the Beginner Low-tier dungeons—the <Tropical Jungle Dungeon>.

The main goal this time was to raise the levels of the three who had joined later.

As for materials, I wasn’t planning to harvest too much this run. Gathering too many just made our packs heavy and didn’t really yield much profit anyway. If we wanted money, it’d be better to push into Beginner Mid-tier, where the real income lies. For now, efficiency came first.

"So, the goal for today: you three will aim for Level 15!"

"""Ooohh!!"""

"Ohh."

I declared the goal, and everyone echoed back with a cheer.

Lana, Ester, and—somehow—Hanna had the most enthusiastic responses. Wait, Hanna? You’re already the highest level here, aren’t you?

Well, whatever. Morale is key, and the energy felt good. Lana’s enthusiasm was genuine, Ester seemed to match Lana’s pace, and Hanna… maybe just got caught up in it.

Sierra, of course, just gave me a cool, deadpan stare. Next time, I’ll make her join in too.

Level 15 was the requirement to enter the Beginner mid-tier.

Once inside, you could enter from Level 15 and grind all the way up to Level 35 at the boss. The other condition was to clear three different Beginner Low-tier dungeons and obtain the <Badge of Clear>.

Beginner mid-tier dungeons were designed for full party raids, so I decided to hold off on my own conquest for now and instead prioritize supporting the girls’ leveling.

So today, we’d challenge the dungeon with all five members.

By supporting them, I wanted them to learn efficiency, pick up the rhythm of fast clearing, and master the art of leveling up.

Since it was a weekday morning, the ShouDan was deserted—no one else in sight.

That meant we could raise our voices to pump ourselves up without issue.

"Alright then—let’s go!"

Leading the way, I stepped into the <Tropical Jungle Dungeon>, followed by Lana, Ester, Sierra, and Hanna in order.

I finally felt like the party was truly getting into motion.

We passed through the gate and looked out over the jungle area we had visited just a few days ago.

Drawn in by the scenery, Lana, Ester, Sierra, and Hanna were all staring around with curiosity.

Hanna had been here once before, but this time she carried the <Gentle Shovel> in her hand. Since her level wouldn’t rise in this Beginner low-tier dungeon, her goal was gathering materials—in other words, she was scanning for collection points.

"Dungeons really are mysterious, aren’t they? One step in and it’s like a whole different world."

"Lady Lana, we never know when monsters might attack. It would be best not to let your guard down."

"Relax. On the first floor, monsters only show up while you’re moving along the path. If you’re standing still, they won’t come at you."

Ester warned Lana, who had let out a sigh of awe, but staying tense the entire time would only wear her out. So I also taught them when to stay alert and when it was safe to relax.

"You researched that?"

"Nah, it’s not even the kind of thing you need to look up… Well, don’t worry. Sierra, I’ll teach you exactly when and where you need to be cautious."

"…Understood."

As the party’s main shield, Sierra had to take the lead. That meant she needed to be especially wary of monsters and traps.

But since this floor had no traps, all she had to do was keep an eye above her while walking. I explained that much to her.

As we continued down the path, an anteater-type monster, a <Quill>, suddenly dropped down from above.

But Sierra spotted it in advance and calmly stepped forward with her shield raised.

"『Provoke』!"

The moment Sierra drew its aggro, the <Quill> locked onto her.

Once I confirmed she had its attention, Lana cast a defensive buff.

"I’ll support you—『Blessing of Protection』!"

Clutching her talisman in both hands as she prayed, a buff spread over all of us, myself included.

Next, Ester stepped forward.

What she wielded was a long double-edged spear, almost mistaken for a greatsword at first glance.

When the <Quill> flinched, repelled by Sierra’s shield, Ester quickly dashed in from the side and activated her skill.

"『Long Thrust』!"

Her strike pierced deep into the <Quill>, which dissolved in an effect glow and disappeared.

『Long Thrust』 was a skill with extended reach, high power, and properties of both thrusting and slashing.

I’d been guiding Ester to focus on thrust-slash style Thrust techniques, rather than just slash-type ones.

"Nice work. You’ve already got the image down pretty well, huh?"

"Yes. Though honestly, the monsters here don’t put up much resistance. It feels… underwhelming."

When I praised their teamwork, Sierra still sounded a little dissatisfied. Lana, standing next to me, also looked annoyed.

"And me—I'm a 【Saint】, but I haven’t even had the chance to use a single healing spell! I’m not saying I want anyone to get hurt, but come on—how am I supposed to shine like this?"

Right now, Ester was undoubtedly the MVP of the group. On the flip side, Lana’s presence barely made a difference.

"Well, that’s just how it is for now. This is only practice, a warm-up phase. Just hang in there a bit longer. Starting on the second floor, multiple monsters appear at once—things will get trickier soon enough."

"I’ll be looking forward to it."

Yeah… she just wanted a chance to show off.

The party steadily advanced deeper without trouble.

"Kuh—『Provoke』!"

A koala-type monster, <Aral>, slipped past Sierra’s shield and lunged toward the backline where Lana stood.

But Sierra’s 『Provoke』 caught it in time, turning its focus back toward her.

"Ester! While Sierra’s holding the others, pick off the strays one at a time! Don’t let anything slip through to the rear guard!"

"Got it!"

We were on the 9th floor now.

Up to four monsters could spawn at once here.

And as expected, once the numbers increased, the difficulty spiked. Their coordination started to fray under the pressure.

I fixed myself in position in front of Lana, protecting the healer, and left the fighting to Sierra, the tank, Ester, the attacker, and Lana as a buffer/healer.

Sierra was doing well, but Ester and Lana still lacked the fundamentals of party battles against multiple foes.

Two or three enemies could still be brute-forced, but once a fourth entered the mix, they started slipping past the front lines.

I gave Ester orders, drilling her on attacker-tank coordination while also explaining general party tactics.

Sierra, though—her performance was impeccable. Coming from a distinguished family, sometimes called the <Royal Shield>, she embodied the tank role perfectly.

Just now, she was holding off three monsters at once, clearly setting it up for Ester to finish off the remaining one.

But because Ester misread the situation and went for Sierra’s group instead, the plan nearly fell apart.

From what I could see, Sierra was already a first-rate tank.

Even at this stage, Lana still looked bored.

Buffs didn’t make much difference yet, and she hadn’t had to use healing even once.

Still, for some reason, being "protected by me" seemed to please her, so at least she was in a good mood…

Hanna, on the other hand, was wandering around gathering materials. Since she was wearing a <Bracelet of 『Guest』>, monsters didn’t target her at all.

The 『Guest』 feature could also be used like a stealth mode in this way.

While all that was happening, Ester had finished off the monsters and returned together with Sierra.

"Lady Sierra, I apologize for my mistake earlier."

"It’s fine. Nothing serious happened, and at first, everyone makes blunders like that. Once you’ve absorbed Zephyrus’ instructions, mistakes like that won’t happen anymore. Work hard."

"Yes. I will devote myself to improvement."

"…Guess I don’t have anything more to add."

Since Ester clearly understood what had caused the near-miss and was already reflecting on it, I didn’t press the issue further. Instead, I brought up what to do next.

"Up ahead is the 10th floor. In other words, the boss's room. What do we do? Challenge it now, or practice a bit more first?"

"…Sir Zephyrus, what do you think? To be honest, I don’t feel very confident right now…"

Ester’s voice was uneasy. Well, she had just slipped up, so that was natural.

"I think we should go," Sierra said plainly.

"Why’s that?" asked Lana, curious.

"Because even if our coordination isn’t perfect yet, we can still push through."

When Sierra voiced her agreement, Lana tilted her head in wonder—but then quickly nodded, like she suddenly understood.

Of course she did. She was the one least feeling real pressure from enemies so far. To her, Sierra’s words sounded like: "We’ll just steamroll this one too."

Not that I’d deny it.

Their equipment was absurdly good—almost on par with my <Sky Series> gear.

Being rich young ladies with family backing really showed in their gear quality. Honestly, I was jealous.

Still, there was a reason for that.

Normally, you couldn’t even unlock a <Princess Job> until at least the latter half of your first year. By that time, gear like theirs wouldn’t have been particularly overpowered. But since <DanKatsu> became real, they’d managed to grab <Princess Jobs> as early as April—something that shouldn’t have been possible—and that turned their equipment into this ridiculous "OP mode."

Well… the same applied to my <Sky Series> gear, so I couldn’t really talk.

Anyway, Sierra clearly understood that with this gear, brute force could carry them through.

Even if it was a boss fight, if it was just a Beginner low-tier one, then with their setup, they could stomp it without breaking a sweat.

I agreed completely, so I had already intended to give the green light. That’s why I didn’t ask "Do we turn back?" but instead "Do we want more practice first?"

Everyone’s gaze turned toward Ester.

"Confidence won’t come unless you prove yourself in battle. First, you should try."

"Ester, I think we should go too. Let’s do it."

"…Y-yes. If Lady Sierra and Lady Lana both say so, then I have no objection."

And so, their very first boss battle awaited them.

We reached the Safe Zone, and right in front of us loomed the boss room.

Beginner low-tier boss rooms were designed so you could observe them. In this <Tropical Jungle Dungeon>, the boss chamber was only surrounded by vine-like fences, so the inside was clearly visible from outside.

"So that’s the boss… it looks pretty strong."

Lana murmured, gazing at it for the first time.

"But, how can I put it… It also looks kind of cute."

"Looks a lot like that <Quill> we saw earlier on the way, just… bigger, maybe?"

So Ester liked cute plushie-type things, huh?

She wasn’t wrong—the boss here did have a surprisingly cute design. At least visually. Not in terms of what it could actually do. After all, it was still a boss.

Sierra didn’t seem to know much about it, so she asked me.

"Don’t let appearances fool you. It’s a boss for a reason—its movements are nothing like the <Quills> on the first floor. By the way, its name is <Bear Anteater>."

"…Wait, so is it a bear? Or an anteater?"

"Oh, I asked that exact same thing."

Well, fair enough—it was confusing.

Sierra, looking uncharacteristically puzzled, found Hanna reaching out like "I totally get that!" The two of them slapped hands together.

Guess that made them comrades-in-confusion.

"An anteater. But it moves like a bear."

"Which one is it then!?"

Hell if I know.

I’d like to know myself, but the devs never answered that question. Pretty sure they didn’t think it through at all.

I ignored Lana’s snapping and started prepping for a break.

Ester seemed to know exactly how to handle these situations, helping out briskly and efficiently. Guess knights really are used to camping and that kind of stuff, huh.

Since I didn’t know much about proper fieldcraft, it ended up with me helping her instead. Good learning experience though.

After eating some light snacks from the <Item Bag (Capacity: Large)> and regaining our strength, we got ready to take on the boss at full power.

"This time, I’m definitely gonna shine!"

"I’ll be counting on Princess Lana’s buffs and heals."

"Leave it to me!"

Up until now, Lana hadn’t really had a chance to do anything, so she was fired up. Sierra just smiled wryly and cheered her on.

…Whether she’d actually get a chance to shine was another matter.

I quietly pulled Sierra aside so Lana wouldn’t overhear.

"Normally, before a boss fight, the tank and healer go over their timing for heals and buffs. But… maybe that’s too soon?"

"Right. Princess Lana hasn’t even cast a healing spell once yet. If you throw too much at her now, she’ll just get confused."

"Then maybe we should limit it to letting her practice heals this time. With a boss, you’ll take at least some damage, right?"

"With my shield, my HP will barely drop. Honestly, even without a shield, it wouldn’t make much difference…"

"Yeah… I figured."

Normally, strong gear is a blessing. But if you want to practice healing, it’s a pain. Can’t exactly tell her to strip down and take hits. I wouldn’t want that either.

Still, if she feels useless, that’ll be another headache.

"Well, I’ll just tell her it’s only until level 20. Once she hits that, she’ll unlock her second tier and can pick up offensive spells like 『Blade of Light』 and 『Pillar of Light』. That’ll give her more chances to contribute."

"Got it. Until then, Princess Lana will just have to endure."

So yeah, her moment in the spotlight’s still a ways off.

With a bit of tension in the air, we challenged the boss.

Sierra was the first through the gate, and the <Bear Anteater> immediately locked onto her.

That’s how it works: the first person through draws aggro. The standard strategy is for everyone else to wait and do nothing until the tank starts building the hate.

That was the plan… until someone got nervous and jumped the gun.

"『Blessing of Protection』!"

It was Lana.

As soon as her defense buff wrapped all five of us, the <Bear Anteater> whipped around and focused on her instead.

"GRAAARGH!"

"Eek!"

The sight of the beast charging on all fours made Lana scream.

Ah, crap. I specifically said to wait until Sierra used 『Provoke』. She really messed up.

Since the boss had no ranged attacks, if someone at a distance drew aggro, it would just charge straight at them.

A bear-level charge. Pretty damn intense—even if it looked like an anteater.

Couldn’t let Lana take the hit, so I moved in front of her.

"Z–Zephyrus…"

She sounded relieved from behind me. Pretty sure her affection level just went up.

Yeah. Protecting a girl from danger—this situation wasn’t bad at all.

Wait a sec… is this my chance to shine?

If I smash this <Bear-Anteater> to pieces right now, I’ll look awesome. No, I will look awesome!

But hold on… this is their first boss fight. I’m supposed to be the instructor.

I can’t just step in and take over…though a little help wouldn’t hurt, right?

Resolving that inner conflict quickly, I raised the <Sky Shield>.

I planned to use my new skill 『Defense』 to block the charge, then crush it in one decisive counterattack—when suddenly, a shadow slipped in from the side.

"『Cover Shield』!"

With courage rivaling a hero’s, Sierra slipped in between the <Bear Anteater> and me.

She took the charge head-on, then let her passive skill 『Flowing Shield Arts』 divert the attack.

A perfect deflection.

"Graa!?"

The <Bear Anteater>, thrown off balance by its own momentum, crashed to the ground. It was down!

…Wait. Where was my big moment?

Sierra’s brilliant play stole it right out from under me.

No, that’s fine. It’s better for the girls if I don’t need to step in.

Still… I kinda wanted something.

"『Provoke』!"

"Nice one, Lady Sierra! Take this—『Long Thrust』!"

Sierra was dominating the fight.

With aggro secured, Ester drove her spear into the boss, tearing away a chunk of its HP.

"Grrruuugh!"

The <Bear Anteater> recovered from its fall, rose up on two legs, and swung both arms down at Sierra.

She skillfully handled it with a mix of 『Guarding Shield Arts』 and 『Flowing Shield Arts』.

Damn, she was good.

"『Provoke』!"

She took every chance to draw more aggro—so skilled it was hard to believe she’d only just gotten her Job recently.

With the boss completely fixated on Sierra, Ester could attack without worry.

"『Long Thrust』!"

She peppered it with normal strikes, then used her skill again as soon as the cooldown ended, carving off more HP.

Yeah, fighting a single enemy really was stable and manageable.

Those two were doing fine.

The problem was Lana, who’d botched things earlier.

"Uuugh… what should I do…?"

Her lack of experience was catching up with her. Combined with her mistake earlier, she was totally paralyzed now—her eyes spinning, like she’d lost all sense of direction.

Too eager to help, but now tangled up in her own nerves.

She wanted to shine. She wanted to support. She wanted to heal. But she was too scared of messing up again. It was written all over her.

I gently took her trembling, stiff hand.

"Ah…"

"Relax. Even if you mess up, I’ll back you up. Just take a deep breath and calm down."

"O-okay. S-suuuh… haaah…"

I shifted my body to block her view of the boss, giving her some cover while I eased the tension from her.

As she breathed, her shoulders slowly relaxed.

"Good. You’re doing great. Now, think back to what you’ve learned. Sierra’s taking damage from the boss’s attacks—Her HP is dropping. What’s your role?"

"…Healing."

"That’s right. Then let’s try it. Take out your talisman."

With my words finally sinking in, Lana steadied herself.

She grasped the <Talisman of Compassion> hanging at her chest, shaped like outspread wings, and closed her eyes.

"Picture your party members. Focus on Sierra—hurt, her HP is low. Only you, 【Saint】 Lana, can heal her. Cast your healing magic. Do it."

"Yeah! 『Prayer of Healing』!"

Clutching the talisman, Lana prayed, and the magic activated.

『Prayer of Healing』 is a spell that only provides a small amount of healing. But when used by a 【Saint】, it adds a regeneration effect, turning it into a top-tier spell.

"Nice, you did it. Open your eyes, Lana—Sierra’s got regen on her now."

"Really!?"

When Lana opened her eyes, she saw Sierra’s body faintly glowing with holy light.

Next to Sierra, her HP bar now showed the regen icon clearly, and her health was completely full. Even when the boss’s attacks shaved off a little, it instantly shot back up to max.

"S-so amazing…"

Lana finally realized the power of the 【Saint】, awe in her voice. Yeah, that’s right—it really is insane.

Against anything below an equal match, it basically turns the whole fight into "permanent max HP fever time—hell yeah!"

(That sounds incredible, but also makes no sense.)

"But if you let your guard down, the effect ends fast. The moment the icon disappears, cast it again. Look, it’s about to fade."

"Okay! 『Prayer of Healing』!"

【Saint】 Lana clutched her talisman and prayed again, sending another wave of healing over Sierra.

Good, perfect.

I let Lana keep praying, just so she wouldn’t forget this sensation.

No need for buffs this time—one step at a time. If I pile on too much at once, she’ll just get overwhelmed again like before.

Especially since, unlike the other two who’d clearly studied this stuff beforehand, Lana’s really just a beginner.

We’ll take it slow.

Meanwhile, the front line was completely stable.

They were still shaky in terms of teamwork, but Sierra’s exceptional skill covered for Ester, who was still awkward with her new weapon.

Ester used to fight with a longsword, but she’d recently decided to switch to a massive two-handed spear. She wasn’t used to it yet, and it looked clumsy in her hands.

That’s why even a <Bear Anteater>—which I could’ve dropped with just over two 『Brave Slashes』—was taking them a bit longer to finish off.

Ester said she had practiced one-handed lances for mounted combat before, but apparently, two-handed spears were a whole different beast.

She’d even told me yesterday she was going to ask Professor Phyllis to introduce her to a 【Halberdier】 or 【Lancer】 instructor.

Anyway, back to the fight—this first boss battle had some dicey moments at the start, but thanks to Sierra’s cover and sheer ability, we steadily pushed the <Bear Anteater> into a corner.

"『Shield Bash』!"

Sierra slammed into it with a shield rush.

"Grrraaahhh…!"

"Now, Ester!"

"Yes! 『Long Thrust』!!"

As the <Bear Anteater> staggered back from the bash, Sierra barked the order without mercy. Ester stepped up from behind, braced her two-handed spear, and unleashed a powerful strike.

『Long Thrust』 hit dead-on with a critical, and the boss was engulfed in the signature explosive effect—leaving behind a <Silver Chest> and its drops before vanishing.

"Did… did we win!?"

"Yeah. Our very first boss battle—complete victory!"

Lana spun toward me for confirmation, and I gave her a thumbs-up.

"We did it."

"We did it!!"

At my words, Sierra and Ester slapped a high five, their faces shining with huge smiles.

Hanna, Lana, and I joined the group there.

But Lana didn’t quite step forward.

She’s usually so bold, yet it seems she’s still hung up on her earlier mistake.

"Fufu, Princess Lana, please—join us."

"Are you sure it’s alright?"

"Of course. This is a victory we seized together as a party!"

"Ah… you’re right. Thank you, Ester. You too, Sierra."

"You’re welcome."

The two of them raised their hands as if to say "no problem at all", and Lana thanked them with a smile.

As I watched the girls high-five each other, their hands suddenly froze midair.

"""Ah."""

All three of them let out a small sound as if they’d just realized something.

I immediately caught on too. It’s here.

The three of them exchanged glances and then raised their right hands.

"Ready? On three, okay?"

At Lana’s words, the other two nodded, and she held her breath for a brief moment.

"Huff… one, two, three—!"

""There!""

And then, as their palms opened in unison, the proof of having conquered the <Tropical Jungle Dungeon> shimmered brightly in each of their hands.

Seeing it, smiles bloomed once more across their faces.

To them, I offered the words they deserved:

Congratulations on your very first dungeon clear.
