"Hawaah!? The boss is gone!?"
Lana’s shout echoed through the silence after the explosion.
The mighty foe we’d just been fighting—<Big Mush>—seemed to have literally blown itself up.
Now, all that remained in its place were two gleaming <Gold Chests> and scattered boss drops.
Well, its HP had already dipped below 10%.
Most likely, when it detonated in rage mode—where its power was multiplied by 1.5—the recoil damage was too much for it to handle. This was something that even happened occasionally back in the <DanKatsu> game days.
Lana, left with her hand raised mid-spell as the boss collapsed on its own, froze in place, not sure what to do anymore. She looked completely unsatisfied, like her fire had been snuffed out too soon.
Well then, there was something I did want her to do.
"Lanaaa~, forget about that—just heal me already~!"
My HP had dropped to around 30%.
"Wha—Zephyrus, what’s with that damage!? 『Wish for Healing』!"
Lana quickly realized and cast a mid-tier healing spell on me.
What happened? Nothing fancy—just that I got caught up in the blast.
Right before <Big Mush> exploded, I’d thrown Sierra toward Ester and tried to get away myself with 『Sonic Sword』. But the leap didn’t carry me far enough, and even shielding myself, I still took a huge hit.
If that had gone off point-blank, I’d have been knocked out for sure. Way too close.
And if that was how much damage I took from afar, then if Sierra had stayed right in front of the boss, locked in 『Iron Wall』, even with the reduced damage, she’d have been cutting it really close.
"Anyway, thanks, Lana. What about Sierra and the others—are they okay?"
"They should be. Look—here they come."
I followed Lana’s gaze, and sure enough, Ester was driving the carriage toward us, Sierra safely riding aboard.
"Thank goodness. Looks like they made it."
"Yeah. I underestimated that blast… If you hadn’t thrown me, I might not be standing here. Thank you, Zephyrus."
"Sure, don’t mention it. I’m just glad you’re safe, Sierra."
In the game, 『Iron Wall』 locked you in place, but you could still be moved with certain displacement or throw-type skills. Figuring it’d work like 『Monster Throw』, I just… tossed her. Glad that gamble paid off.
When the carriage pulled up alongside us, Sierra and I exchanged relieved smiles and even laughed a little, just happy she was alright.

Even though Ester had used her super-speed skill 『Overdrive』 to escape, she hadn’t quite made it out of the blast radius. Since carriage damage gets transferred to the user, her HP had been shaved down to 25%. If she’d been any closer to the boss, it could’ve been fatal.

Lana pouted her lips, clearly frustrated at not getting the satisfaction of finishing the boss. Honestly, it was kinda cute.
Still, a boss going out with a self-destruct like that really was rare. A special phenomenon, in its own way.
"Zephyrus. Good work."
"Yeah, you too, Kalua."
Kalua, the speedster, even at the top of <Eden>’s rankings, had easily dodged the explosion. We shared a quick high five, congratulating each other.
"Alright then—time for the moment we’ve all been waiting for! Let’s open those <Gold Chests>!!"
"Oh, right! Let me open one!"
"Nope."
"Whaaat, why not!?"
Lana’s mood shot right back up at the mention of treasure, only to be instantly shot down.
This had to be done fairly.
"Ester, you can open the first one."
"Are you sure? But to take precedence over Lady Lana…"
"Don’t worry about it. You’ve carried us hard as the newest member and put in a ton of work. I’ll allow it."
"Then allow me too!"
"Nah. The other one goes to Kalua."
At my words, everyone turned to Kalua.
"Hm?"
She tilted her head, clearly confused. Did she even realize what we were talking about?
"Goes to Kalua?"
"Yeah. It was Kalua's turn next anyway, but more than that—it’s just a hunch."
"A hunch? That’s your reason?"
"I can’t explain it, but… something tells me it should be her. Right, Kalua?"

Kalua herself didn’t really get it, but her eyes had been glued to one of the chests for a while now.
Maybe there was something in there calling to her. Hunches like this usually turned out right.

We all moved in front of the treasure and, as usual, said a quick prayer together.
Then Kalua opened the first chest.
"…This is, shoes?"

It really was that. I almost couldn’t believe it, but I clenched my fist in a silent victory pose.
Kalua had pulled exactly the equipment I’d been hoping for—footwear, and not just any footwear.

Then there was the active skill 『Blazing Speed』. It only worked in straight lines, but it let you dash with blinding velocity—like a body-flicker technique. And since the boots’ thruster-like effect fired off as if they were exploding, it could even be used midair. Truly the defining feature of the super-rare <Blazing Speed Star Boots>.
And to top it off, the thruster effect was shaped like a black cat. Instead of exhaust ports, little cat designs were drawn on the soles. No one had any clue where the jets actually came from. Gotta love game logic. Whoever designed these boots was clearly a cat lover.
The last skill, 『Trap Break』, did exactly what the name suggested—when you triggered a trap, it would auto-activate and blow it apart. Extremely convenient. It even worked on trapped treasure chests. Definitely powerful.
Back in the game days, I’d gotten lucky and pulled these boots once myself. They were a favorite of mine.
The only downside was the steep requirement: an insane 【AGI 200+】.
Very few characters could hit that threshold. And since the boost's DEF and MDEF values were relatively low, by the time players finally did reach 200 AGI, they were usually wearing higher-level gear anyway. In other words, if you couldn’t equip them right now, they’d end up collecting dust.
And among us, the only one who met the requirement was Kalua. These boots might as well have been made for her.

Unlike the oversized version the boss carried, this one was shrunk down to about a meter across, though it still looked ridiculously flashy. Technically, a jackpot. Even if it did look exactly like a giant parasol.
<Gold Chests> from rare bosses were known to have higher chances of boss equipment, and rare boss gear was always absurdly strong.
This shield was no exception. Definitely something I’d want one of us to use. Up until now, most boss drops were unusable by <Eden>’s members, so this might be our first proper boss gear.
I glanced over at Sierra.

Ouch. Rejected immediately.
Well, equipping it myself would break my <Sky Series> set bonus, so… yeah.
With no takers, I quietly stowed it away in my <Item Bag>. Looked like the boss drop would be gathering dust for a while.
The last chest was a bit underwhelming, but with the quest complete, it was time to head back.
