Chapter 6: The Headmaster Reflects on Today’s Job Assessment
It was the night of the grand event—Job Assessment Day.
In the headmaster’s office sat Duke Vandamud Fagner, whose Santa-like beard was a bit too eye-catching, and Lady Phyllis Reactone, the young female staff member who had handled the now-famous student who acquired the 【Hero】 job.
"You did well today, Phyllis."
"No, it was a valuable experience. Besides, I was the one who insisted on participating, so I have no complaints."
When they’re alone, Vandamud calls her "Phyllis" casually.
That’s because these two are grandfather and granddaughter.
Vandamud is a powerful duke of the Kingdom of Sheyatna and the director of the prestigious >National Dungeon Exploration Academy – Main Campus>.
Phyllis Reactone is the eldest daughter of Marquis Reactone—her mother is Vandamud’s daughter.
She was doted on by her grandfather since she was young, and since she herself attended this academy back in the day, their relationship is strong and close.
When she graduated, Vandamud personally invited her to come work at the academy, and she officially took up the position of teacher this year.
Given her noble status, she would typically be assigned to the <Noble Tower> or <Noble Department>.
But Phyllis chose the <Dungeon Exploration Department>, specifically the <Combat Division>.
It’s a flashy department known for training students to learn and master their jobs, but it’s also known for being one of the toughest places to start as a new teacher.
Still, knowing she’d likely be married off within a few years, Phyllis wanted to experience working in the Dungeon Exploration Department as soon as possible. She asked for the position directly, and Vandamud made it happen.
"I must say, I was truly surprised. To think someone would actually acquire the 【Hero】 job."
Vandamud let out a low murmur.
The 【Hero】 job is almost legendary.
Records show the last time it appeared was 500 years ago, and even then, only unofficially—just a story of a party that included a 【Hero】 clearing a high-level dungeon. That record itself is questionable.
However, another record—this one officially endorsed by the royal family—states that 【Hero】 is an extremely powerful job, excelling in offense, magic, defense, and healing.
Which means, at the very least, the royal family recognizes the strength of the 【Hero】 job.
What came to Vandamud’s mind was that mysterious yet confident young man who hadn’t been shaken at all by the attention he received.
In Vandamud’s 60 years of experience, even royal or noble children would get flustered under that kind of sudden spotlight.
But that young man, Zephyrus, handled it like it was perfectly natural.
The fact that he isn’t even a noble and yet carried such composure—Vandamud couldn’t help but wonder what kind of life he’d led.
Also, Vandamud had never seen anyone with that many job affinities—including quite a few jobs even he had never heard of before.
And despite all those possibilities, Zephyrus chose 【Hero】 without hesitation. That kind of boldness impressed him deeply.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that Zephyrus might be destined to make history.
"Yes. It was my very first Job Assessment Day as a new staff member, and I panicked and made mistakes. I was really grateful you stepped in for me, Grandpa."
"Haha… hard to say if it was good luck or bad. The Dungeon Exploration Department often comes with unexpected surprises. Keep working hard."
"I will. This has been a valuable learning experience."
"Good. Also, about Zephyrus—he’ll be joining the Dungeon Exploration Department - Combat Division. That makes him your junior, by chance. We’d like to assign a homeroom teacher from our trusted staff. Phyllis, would you like to take the role?"
Phyllis blinked in surprise.
She’d only just recently been a student in that exact division herself.
"…Are you sure? Wouldn’t someone more experienced be better for this?"
"Of course, it won’t be just you. We’ll assign two assistant teachers as well. You can learn from them. Honestly, no one has experience teaching a 【Hero】, so in that sense, you’re all on equal footing. And because you’re closer in age, I believe you can relate to him better and guide him with more empathy."
"…I see. Understood. I’d be honored to take the position."
"Very good. I’m counting on you, Phyllis."
And so, Zephyrus's homeroom teacher was decided:
A beautiful, 19-year-old, newly appointed teacher.
