Chapter 4: Tremble Before This Job List
"Next person, please."
While I was fuming about how a joke job like 【Muscle Warrior】 is actually popular in this world, and vowing to spread proper <DanKatsu> from now on… it seems our turn had come.
Right, we’d been waiting in line for the job assessment.
"Alright, Hanna, you're up. Go on and become an 【Alchemist】."
"Hmm, okay. Got it. If it’s there, I’ll pick it. 【Alchemist】!"
"It is there, don’t worry."
I cheered her on as she stepped forward.
Hanna stood before the <Dragon Statue>, and, following the teacher’s instructions, cautiously reached out and placed her hand on the dragon’s head.
Then—
"Whoa! 【Alchemist】 is actually here! I can’t believe it! I heard it really depends on talent!"
She turned around with the biggest smile after checking the list that appeared above the statue.
"Told you, didn’t I? Now, hurry up and choose 【Alchemist】. And don’t you dare put it off hoping for something ‘better’ to pop up."
Choosing a job here is a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
That’s why people in this world are super careful when picking their job.
Which job options appear depends on a ton of stuff—your social standing at birth, your habits, your actions, your beliefs, your knowledge, even your mindset.
Since the selection window lasts a whole month, it’s pretty common for people to hold off until the last moment to try and get a better job.
But that won’t work for us. If Hanna delays her decision, it’s gonna mess with our plans. So she needs to pick now.
And honestly, when it comes to alchemy-related jobs, the only one above 【Alchemist】 is something like 【Dark Alchemist】—which is evil-aligned, so yeah, no thanks.
"R-right. Then I’ll choose it."
She must’ve picked 【Alchemist】, because the job list vanished and the word 【Alchemist」 zoomed in, center-screen.
And with that, Hanna officially became an 【Alchemist」.
"Congrats on getting your job. Wishing you all the best. Do your best from here on out."
"Ah, thank you so much!"
The female teacher in charge congratulated her, and Hanna gave her a bright, respectful bow.
By the way, "job awakening" is the term used for when someone gets their job for the first time. It’s kind of like a rite of passage.
I think of it as the fantasy world version of getting served red rice at a celebration.
Starting today, Hanna’s officially part of the grown-up world.
As I watched her walk out of the line, cheeks flushed with excitement, I realized—next up is me.
"Hope you get a good one."
"Haha, leave it to me. I’m about to hit the jackpot and pull the best job ever."
I boldly declared that to Sierra, who was standing behind me in line, and stepped up to the dragon statue.
Meanwhile, over in another line, someone apparently got the 【Muscle Warrior】 job—people were cheering like crazy.
Quit flipping out over a damn joke job.
Time to teach ‘em all.
What a real top-tier, truly OP job looks like!
Feast your eyes! This is just one corner of the legendary 1,021-job lineup from <DanKatsu>!
Here comes my job list!

"Eh?!"
The female teacher assigned to me let out a surprised gasp as she looked at the display list.
I couldn’t help but grin at her reaction.
After all, during the long, long journey to the academy, I spent my time fulfilling every possible job condition I could.
No wonder she'd never seen a job list this insane before.
She was visibly shaken.
Honestly, watching her react like that was pretty satisfying.
"What’s going on, Miss Reactone?"
The first to notice and approach was an older man with a Santa-like beard—an eye-catching presence.
He was none other than the headmaster, one of the top officials of this academy.
"H-Headmaster… this―ah…"
The flustered teacher instinctively pointed at the job list on display, then froze, realizing her mistake.
Some students prefer to keep their job lists private.
If I were royalty or nobility, this could’ve caused a serious problem.
Totally her fault.
But no worries.
I’m just a villager, and honestly, I want people to see my job list.
Realizing she’d pointed at my job list, the headmaster looked at me to ask for permission with a glance.
I gave a little hand wave—go ahead.
Then...
"What! This is...!"
The headmaster’s eyes went wide as he stared at it in disbelief.
People nearby—teachers and students alike—started gathering around, curious.
"Oi, what the hell is with that number of jobs?!"
"No way… There are even high-ranking jobs in there!"
"Yo, look at that! There’s even 【Hero】 listed!"
"Who the heck is this guy?"
"Wait—he’s got 【Great Swordmaster】?! Even commoners with that job are guaranteed high positions!"
"Not just that—he’s got 【Archmage】 and 【High Priest】 too!"
"What’s even going on right now?!"
The entire gym fell into a wave of gasps and murmurs.
Yes, that’s right. Feast your eyes.
Tremble before this job list.
And learn this: <DanKatsu> is a treasure trove of jobs!
There are tons of jobs that you can’t even see—let alone unlock—just by playing once or twice.
Even with this many jobs on display, it's still just the tip of the iceberg.
So don’t waste your time aiming for silly stuff like 【Muscle Warrior】.
<DanKatsu> has tons of jobs way stronger than that meme-tier pick, you know?
From there, chaos broke out.
Everyone in the gym was focused on me.
No one cared about their own job test anymore.
Just when I thought the headmaster was going to ask more questions, a bunch of staff members in lab coats—clearly researchers—came rushing over.
They formed a wall in front of my job list and started scribbling notes like maniacs.
Most people would be like, "What the hell is going on?" But I’ve been down this road before. I just gave them a nod.
The hardest part of dealing with jobs is figuring out what they’re even called.
You can’t search for something if you don’t know its name.
But once you know the name, you can work backward and figure out how to unlock it.
Instead of wasting time chasing jobs that might exist, it’s way more productive to research known jobs and find their conditions.
Judging by the researchers’ excitement, I must’ve had a lot of undiscovered ones.
Eventually, they finished jotting down their notes and tried to interview me, but the headmaster put a stop to it.
He told them this was still job assessment time and that they’d have to come back later.
The researchers left reluctantly, tears of frustration in their eyes.
Heh, glad to see we’ve got some real job nerds around here.
Honestly, I’d been worried that everyone here would just goof off chasing joke jobs like 【Muscle Warrior】.
But knowing there are folks like them out there made me feel a bit better.
I’m not about to give away all my secrets for free, but maybe I’ll toss them a hint or two—just enough to keep them away from joke jobs.
By that point, the gym had mostly calmed down.
Well… more like everyone had their eyes glued on me, waiting to see what I’d pick.
The air felt weird—like the whole room was trying not to blink in case they missed something.
Even Sierra, who stood behind me, was eyeing me closely for some reason.
…Fine.
"Now then, Zephyrus-kun. You’ve got quite a selection here. It might take you some time to decide. Why not take it home and think it over? Naturally, we’ll help you with any undiscovered jobs. We’re happy to assist…"
The headmaster suggested holding off for now.
A perfectly reasonable idea.
When I first started <DanKatsu>, I also struggled to choose a job.
In the end, I just went with my gut.
With this many jobs available, it’s only natural that it’d take time to choose.
The academy probably just wants to stick to the schedule and wrap things up.
Alright then…
"Don't worry. I’ve already made my choice."
I adjusted my tone slightly—gotta be respectful with the headmaster, after all.
Then, from the mountain of jobs, I picked the one I had decided on from day one in this world.
It’s been a long journey.
In the game, this would’ve only taken about ten minutes.
But in real-life <DanKatsu>, it took nearly two weeks to get here.
Now, the real game finally begins.
The job I chose to partner with for my <DanKatsu> is…
────【Hero】.
『Job acquired: <【Hero】>』
The system announcement rang out.
My job list closed, and the name 【Hero】 zoomed into focus.
I am now a 【Hero】.
Whispers filled the gym.
The entire room buzzed with energy.
Everyone stared, fixated on the job I had chosen.
"【Hero】..."
Someone muttered.
And somehow, in the hushed, reverent atmosphere, it echoed loud and clear.
Yeah, I chose the 【Hero】 job.
Unlock Requirements:
〈① Defeat 1,000 monsters. ② No job acquired yet. ③ Equipped with a sword and shield. ④ Save a person’s life (achieved through a quest). ⑤ "Protagonist" only.〉
Among the starting job options in <DanKatsu>, 【Hero】 falls just a bit short of 【Muscle Warrior】 in terms of raw stats, but its SUP (Status Up Points) are super high. It comes packed with powerful, all-rounder skills that cover offense, magic, defense, healing, and more. It even gets two unique skills, which is nuts. It’s the strongest of the strong.
Ranked #1 in the official "Top of Jobs" power rankings—that’s 【Hero】.
This is what a real top-tier job should look like!
In front of everyone, without even glancing at the other job options, I confidently and without hesitation chose 【Hero】.
"Thank you very much. I’ve successfully acquired my job."
"Eh, ah, yes. Congratulations on getting your job. I truly, sincerely offer my congratulations."
I thanked the stunned female staff member first, and she hurriedly straightened up and returned the favor with polite words.
Honestly, she sounded even more formal than when she talked to Hanna earlier.
Hah, looks like the aura of the 【Hero】 is already working its magic.
Strong jobs are awesome!
These days, thanks to the light novel boom, Heroes tend to get cast as the villains.
But in games? They’re still insanely popular.
<DanKatsu> is a hit game too, and naturally, to meet player demand, it features a whopping 1,021 jobs—with 【Hero】 sitting at the top.
In the ancient lore of <DanKatsu>, 【Hero】 is a legendary job that once saved the world from evil alongside a dragon, bringing peace to the land.
If you want to aim for the strongest, there’s no better pick.
Past or present—【Hero】 is always popular, powerful, and number one!
That’s why I’m using 【Hero】.
I’m gonna fully enjoy this real-life <DanKatsu> world—as a 【Hero】!
That’s the decision I made.
Just then, the academy headmaster came up and spoke to me.
"Let me offer my congratulations, too. Well done on acquiring your job. In all my 60 years working at this academy, I’ve never once seen the 【Hero】 job. And even among the other jobs today, there were some impressive ones. If you ever find yourself in trouble here, Zephyrus-kun, come talk to me. I’ll help however I can."
Whoa!
Even the headmaster gave me a personal congratulations?
And said I could come to him if I ever needed help? That’s super reassuring.
The female staff and Sierra were just as shocked by the headmaster’s words, and the buzz in the gym grew even louder.
"Thank you for your kindness. I’ll definitely take you up on that if the time comes."
"Ha ha, good. Keep striving forward."
Looking satisfied, the headmaster stepped away, climbed the stage, and announced the resumption of the job measurement ceremony to the entire gym.
With that, the job selection process finally got back in motion.
